Why are lips injected with Juvéderm?

Sometimes lips are injected to make them fuller. Other times it is because the lips are uneven and it’s an attempt to make the lips more balanced. For other patients they want to regain the lips they had in their youth.

Which fillers are used for lip augmentation?

In Dr Jaliman’s practice there are 3 main hyaluronic acid fillers used to add volume to the lips. These are Juvéderm, Restylane and Prevelle Silk.

What is the difference between these fillers?

Prevelle Silk is the thinnest of the hyaluronic acid fillers so it lasts for the shortest amount of time and is a good choice for someone who’s never had lip filler and just wants to try it. Juvéderm and Restylane are very similar but are made by different companies. The Juvéderm is a little thinner than the Restylane.

Can I have Juvéderm injections on the day of the consultation?

Yes on the day of your consultation you can actually have your Juvéderm lip injections.

Can my lips be numbed prior to lip injections with Juvéderm?

There is a topical numbing cream that is applied to both the inside and outside of the lips for 15 to 20 minutes before the procedure. For patients that are very sensitive, injections can be placed inside the lip to totally numb the area.

How are the lips injected with Juvéderm?

A micro fine needle is used to inject the Juvéderm into the lips in small aliquots.

How long does it take to inject Juvéderm into the lips?

The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes.

Will my lips look natural after Juvéderm lip injections?

It is important to have a detailed discussion with your dermatologist as to your desired goals for your lip. Sometimes patients bring photographs of the lips that they like. Realistically, not everybody can have Angelina Jolie’s full voluptuous lips. In our practice we aim to please but it’s also important to be realistic. You can only enhance what you have, so if you start with very thin lips you may end up with normal lips not very full ones.

Can uneven lips be fixed with Juvéderm lip injections?

This is one of the most rewarding areas of lip injections. Dr. Jaliman has taken patients with a small left upper lip and matched it to the size of the right upper lip. This asymmetry can happen because of prior uneven lip filler or can be a natural occurrence.

How many syringes of Juvéderm will it take for lip injections?

Everyone is individual but most patients only require one syringe of Juvéderm.

What can I expect after the Juvéderm injections?

After the injections the area will be massaged to make certain that no bumps are present in the lips. Then ice will be placed on the area to take down any swelling.

Are there any side effects after the injections into the lips?

It is possible that you may have slight swelling or bruising at the injection site. The bruising may last anywhere from a few days to a week. The swelling may last a day or two.

What can I do before the Juvéderm injections in the lips to prepare?

It is best to avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E one week prior to the injections. These substances thin the blood and make you bruise more easily.

When will I see the results?

The best part of this treatment is that you will see your results immediately.

Can I have Juvéderm injections if I have herpes on my lip?

In this case it is necessary to take Valtrex pills the day before the procedure and the day after to prevent the herpes from returning.

Can I wear lipstick after the Juvéderm injections in my lip?

You can put lipstick or lip gloss on right after the lip injections.

Can I resume my normal activities after Juvéderm lip injections?

Right after the injections you can go back to your normal every day activities and even exercise.

What happens if I feel bumps in my lips weeks after the Juvéderm injections?

There is an injection of a substance called Vitrase which can dissolve the bumps.

What is the natural proportion of lips?

The lower lip should be larger than the upper lip. It should be one and a half times bigger then the upper lip.

Why do lips get smaller as we age?

Just as we lose collagen in our face as we get older and we get wrinkles. We also lose collagen in our lips and our lips shrink and get smaller as we age.

How long will my new lips last?

Juvéderm in the lips can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months.

What can I do if I have a lip lines above my lip?

It may be necessary to have Botox injections to soften these lines. Beletero, a fine line hyaluronic acid filler can also be injected into these fine lines.

There are also lasers that can be used for fine lines above the lips. A nonablative laser (which doesn’t break the skin) and has no downtime like the Medlite laser which requires six treatments done 6 weeks apart can be used. Or a Fraxel laser which requires a few days of downtime and may require multiple lasers done 4 weeks apart can be used to treat the lines above the lips.
