What is a mole removal?

Some people decide to have an unsightly mole removed. It may not be medically necessary but some people find that they want their mole removed for cosmetic reasons. This is a very simple surgical procedure.

How is a mole removal performed?

The skin is numbed with a small needle and a little bit of local anesthetic. After a few minutes when the skin is fully numbed then the mole is surgically removed. It can either be shaved off the surface in which case there are no stitches. If the mole is deep it may be necessary to cut deeper and put stitches into the skin.

How long do the stitches remain?

Stitches usually remain for 11 days if they are placed on the body. They stay only 5 to 7 days if they are on the face.

Does the wound need special care?

It’s important to take good care of the surgical site. Use rubbing alcohol to clean the wound and apply Aquaphor ointment or an antibiotic. Cover the wound.

Can I take a shower right after the surgery?

It’s best to wait 48 hours after the surgery before showering. There are special waterproof bandages that can be worn if you need to shower. The best one is called Duoderm Extra Thin and is available in our office.

Can I go into the sun right after surgery?

It’s best to avoid the sun for a few weeks after surgery. When you do go in the sun it’s important to wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen.

Are there scar bandages I can wear to improve healing?

Mepiform is an excellent scar bandage that can be worn when the sutures are removed.

Is a cosmetic mole removal covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, a cosmetic mole removal is not covered by insurance. Only suspicious looking moles are covered by insurance.
