This page offers a general overview of some of the dermatologic procedures that dermatologist Debra Jaliman performs in her office.

Skin Care Procedures

Acne Treatments: acne is one of the most common skin diseases that Dr. Debra Jaliman treats. Acne is the term used for a blocked pore resulting in whiteheads, blackheads, cysts and nodules that usually occur on the face, back and shoulders. There are many different types of acne treatments available. The earlier you treat your acne the better the prognosis. In many cases acne scars can be prevented. If you do get acne scars, they can be improved and minimized by lasers and by filler injections. A skin care regimen for your acne will be tailored to your individual needs.

Cyst Removal: if you have a cyst that needs removal it is very easily done under local anesthetic. It is usually a 30-minute procedure. It does require sutures.

You may choose to remove a skin lesion for a number of reasons:

  • To stop discomfort caused by skin lesions rubbing on clothing
  • To remove a lesion on the face which you find unsightly
  • To enhance the aesthetic appearance of your body

Whatever your reason, simply schedule an appointment at our Manhattan office and we can easily remove your cyst.

Facials – Medical Facial: A medical facial is an intensive treatment for clogged pores. Our facial is designed for acne prone, oily and combination skin types. The facial consists of using a salicylic acid mask and an exfoliating cleanser that contains papain a papaya extract. This facial treatment controls acne by gently removing the dead skin cells that clog pores and cause blackheads and whiteheads. These lead to acne breakouts.

The Facial will refine enlarged pores, improves skin texture and clarity, and will also control acne.

Microdermabrasion: In addition to the face, microdermabrasion can be successfully used on the neck, arms and hands. It is also beneficial for patients with darker skin types. This rejuvenation method is generally indicated for:

  • Dull, oily or leathery skin texture
  • Contracting enlarged pores
  • Exfoliating and suctioning clogged pores in acne cases
  • Polishing and reducing fine lines
  • Mild acne scarring
  • Mild pigment irregularities
  • Enhancing penetration of therapeutic agents

Microdermabrasion is effective in reducing fine lines, “crow’s feet,” age spots and acne scars. It stimulates the production of skin cells and collagen. Microdermabrasion has proven to be a very popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure.

Mole Removal: The majority of moles and other blemishes are benign (not-cancer). A mole will never be a threat to the health of the person who has them. Spots or blemishes that warrant medical concern are those that do something out of the ordinary-those that act differently from other existing moles. This includes any spot that changes in size, shape or color, or one that bleeds, itches, becomes painful, or first appears when a person is past twenty.

Occasionally, a mole may become a cancerous growth. Therefore, it’s best to get medical advice if you notice a mole that does not follow the normal pattern. Board Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Jaliman may be able to assure you that the mole is harmless in one simple visit.

The dermatologist will remove the mole, or part of it, so that thin sections from the mole can be cut and examined under a microscope. This is a simple and harmless procedure. If the growth was only partially removed and it is found to be cancerous, then the entire lesion and an extra margin of safety will need to be removed.

A person may wish to get rid of moles that are in areas of trauma, where clothing can irritate them, or simply because they are unattractive. The most common methods of removal include numbing the spot and then shaving the mole off, or for some moles, cutting out the entire lesion and stitching the area closed. The removal of your mole will not leave a scar.

Rashes: Rashes are your body’s way of telling you it really doesn’t like something. The most common rashes are a result from adverse reactions to medications, ingredients in a lotion or shampoo, metals, or even food.

Unfortunately, some rashes will only go away if treated by your dermatologist. These types of rashes include severe forms of common rashes such as acne, atopic dermatitis, and rosacea.

Some rashes are chronic, or long-term, requiring regular check-ups to keep them under control. You should consider seeing Board Certified Dermatologist, Debra Jaliman if your regular regimen is not working and your rash simply is not going away.

Rosacea: Rosacea is a facial rash usually composed of prominent redness and sometimes pimples as well. Rosacea tends to occur in the central part of the face and around the nose, cheeks, chin and/or forehead. Long term Rosacea may produce Rhinophyma, an enlarged nose, typified by W.C. Field’s nose. Dr. Jaliman can treat your rosacea quickly and easily.

Skin Tag Removal: Almost all skin tags are benign. Skin tag’s tend to form along the neckline, under arms, beneath the breasts, eyelids, and may even arise in the groin. Where there’s one, there’s often many. These soft, fleshy bumps hang off the skin’s surface by a stalk, hence the slang “tag” (for medical purists, the term is acrochordon).

Most people hate their skin tags for both the aesthetics as well as the potential daily irritation they present from friction due to clothing and jewelry. Usually, the worst things that can happen are a bit of local trauma or falling victim to a necklace, zipper or razor. But why live with them? Your skin tag(s) can be removed by a dermatologist immediately and painlessly.

Skin Infections: Skin problems and skin infections are very common, some are caused by germs, environmental conditions, or injuries, some are just from natural body processes as you develop into being an adult. You can avoid most skin disorders and skin infections but with some you may need to see a dermatologist.

Skin Resurfacing: Skin resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure performed to remove the fine lines of the face. The skin is often prepared with Retin-A especially if there is sun damage. Skin resurfacing is also performed after scar revision to smooth or sand scars and make them appear more even.

The principle of resurfacing the skin is straightforward. Dermabrasion, chemical peeling and laser resurfacing work in similar ways. The top layer of the skin is removed and as the new skin grows there are changes in the remaining skin. Which of these procedures is best for you, depends on several factors and Board-Certified Dermatologist, Debra Jaliman, MD can discuss them with you.

Sun Damage Treatments: Repeated, prolonged sun exposure causes skin damage, especially in fair skinned individuals. Sun damaged skin becomes dry and wrinkled and may form rough, scaley spots called solar (Actinic) keratoses. These rough spots remain on the skin even though the crust or scale is picked off. Our sun damage treatment removes these abnormal cells. New skin then forms from the deeper skin cells that have escaped damage.

Wart Removal: Self-treatment of wart removal is generally not recommended for any kinds of wart because you may infect the wart even more. Please see a dermatologist to remove your wart safely and effectively.

Feel free to schedule a consultation with Board Certified Dermatologist, Debra Jaliman, MD at her Manhattan, New York City office to discuss any dermatology questions or treatments which concern you.
