“I’ve always dreaded getting my lips injected. Now with the new Juvederm it was a breeze. I barely felt anything. I couldn’t believe it when they said I was done and handed me the mirror. I had these full pouty lips. Now all I had to do was pick the lipstick that would compliment them best.”

Unlike regular Juvéderm, Juvéderm XC contains lidocaine, a local anesthesia that provides a more comfortable treatment.
Juvéderm XC is injected into areas of facial tissue where moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds occur. It temporarily adds volume to the skin and restores a smoother yet natural appearance to the face.
Juvéderm and Juvéderm XC are fillers made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that is found in human skin. With Juvéderm XC there is minimal recovery or down time, and patients see an immediate improvement.
Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing or lip plumping, and the results last up to 6 months or more. However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental “touch up” treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.
What is Juvéderm?
Juvéderm is an injectable gel made of hyaluronic acid, a substance found in human skin. Our skin is made of a collagen, elastic fibers and hyaluronic acid. When when any of these components of the skin breaks down we get lines and wrinkles. If we can replace the hyaluronic acid then we can fill the lines and wrinkles in your skin.
How is Juvéderm administered?
Juvéderm is injected with a microfine needle into your skin to fill wrinkles or add volume.
What can be injected with Juvéderm?
Lips can be made fuller, facial wrinkles can be smoothed and facial depressions and scars can be filled and lifted.

JuvédermXC has lidocaine in it. This is a local anesthetic so it numbs the skin as you are having the injections.

There is a topical numbing preparation that can be applied to the skin for 15 to 20 minutes before the procedure. This makes the injections more comfortable.
How should you prepare for Juvéderm injections?
It is important that you avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E and alcohol for one week prior to your treatment session. This will minimize the chances of bruising.
What are possible complications of Juvéderm?
Most of the side effects are minimal. It is possible to get redness or bruising in the area where the skin was injected. It is also possible to feel firmness or have swelling at the injection site. Most of this will resolve within a day or two. In some cases it may take a week to two weeks to resolve.

In our office we have light treatments that can speed up the resolution of bruising. It is important to call the office if you have any problems after your treatment as there are medications that can decrease the swelling is well.
How long should I wait before having additional Juvéderm injections?
Some people have small quantities of Juvéderm placed, wait a week and then have additional Juvéderm added. The advantage in our office is that you only pay for the Juvéderm syringe that you have. There is no additional cost for the office visit. Many patients like this approach because they can gradually have their face filled so that their friends and family do not notice.
How long does Juvéderm last?
It depends on the location in the face that the Juvéderm is injected into. So for example, if Juvéderm is injected into the smile lines and you smile a lot you will break down the Juvéderm faster. It may only last 6 to 9 months. If Juvéderm is injected into an acne scar it can last a year or more. Please note that everybody is different so the amount of time it lasts does vary from person to person.
What happens if I do not like the Juvéderm?
There is a dissolver for Juvéderm called Vitrase. It is injected into the skin and it dissolves the unwanted filler. That is the advantage of using a hydronic acid filler it can be dissolved at any time.

Most people scheduled their Juvéderm injections every 6 to 9 months.

The great part about filler injections are that right after having them you will see an immediate result. Many of my patients put on their make up and then go to their next appointment, back to the office, or even to a lunch date.
Is there any downtime from Juvéderm injections?
I would not plan to have Juvéderm injections if you have a big event coming up. It’s best to schedule it one week to two weeks before the event to give your skin a chance to heal after the injections. Just in case you’re the unlucky person that gets a bruise or swelling it’s best to take this precaution.

Can I be allergic to Juvéderm?
It is very unlikely that you will be allergic to Juvéderm. It is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in our skin. There is no skin test for Juvéderm. As with anything there are rare instances of allergic reactions to any substance. If you feel you are particularly allergic to many things special precautions can be taken.
