Solar (Actinic)
Keratosis Treatment
Board Certified Dermatologist, Debra Jaliman,
MD is one of Manhattan, New York's leading authorities on solar (actinic)
keratosis - otherwise known as sun damage.
What
is Sun Damage?
Repeated, prolonged sun exposure
causes skin damage, especially in fair skinned individuals. Sun damaged
skin becomes dry and wrinkled and may form rough, scaley scpots called solar
(Actinic) keratoses. These rough spots remain on the skin even though the
crust or scale is picked off. Treatment removes these abnormal cells. New
skin then forms from the deeper skin cells that have escaped damage.
Why is Solar Keratosis
Treatment Necessary?
These keratoses are not skin
cancers. In approximately 10% of the population these lesions will go on to
become skin cancers. There is no way to predict by looking at the skin
which of these will become malignant. Therefore, it is essential that these
be treated.
Sun Damage Treatment
There are many treatments that
are equally effective. Board
Certified Dermatologist, Debra Jaliman, MDcan be remove
your sun damage as an out-patient at her Manhattan, New York office surgically or by
freezing. The type of treatment used depends upon many factors including
the location, the size, the number of growths and the condition of the
surrounding skin. A series of freezing treatments, two – four weeks apart
may be necessary to achieve optimal results. The hands and legs heal more
slowly than the face. Sun damage is permanent. Once sun damage has
progressed to the point where solar (actinic) keratoses develop, new growths
appear without further exposure.
Sun Damage Prevention
The use of an SPF15 sunscreen or greater
is advised on a daily basis and especially during prolonged sun exposure. A
PABA-free sunscreen is available in our office.
